Nascar, God, & Bacon

I'm an avid NASCAR fan.  Junior Johnson, one of the sports pioneers, had an expression to explain the difference between being "involved" & being "committed".  Junior would ask you if you've ever had bacon and eggs, the reply from most was "of course", to which Junior would in turn explain "The Chicken was involved, but the pig was committed".  Tonight I turn that same mindset to scripture.

Nehemiah 2;13-20

13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire.14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool, but there was no room for the animal that was under me to pass.15 Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall, and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned.16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work.
17 Then I said to them, You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.18 And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for the good work.19 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?20 Then I replied to them, The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem. 
Nehemiah was the cupbearer to the King and God had granted his prayer.  Nehemiah was not turned away by outside forces, nay sayers, he instead was wholly reliant on God.  Nehemiah's every move and encounter with the King pushed the envelope.  In verses 13-20 It paints a clear picture of the starting point and the dire state in which things were in.  The walls were broken down and the gates had been destroyed by fire.  When He spoke to others and expressed his desire to build the wall of Jerusalem, many nay sayers rose up against him.   Nehemiah spoke boldly, relying on God to have his back.  Nehemiah was committed, not just involved.  
Today we must look at our own lives, take stock of the areas of our lives that are broken down, the gates or entryways to ourselves that have been destroyed by fire.  It could be our eyes, our ears, our tongue, our thoughts, our pride, or many other things.  But take survey and carefully note what needs to be rebuilt, strengthened, or in some cases demolished and begun from scratch.  Be prepared for others to speak against you, and be prepared to seek out those who will help you accomplish the things that God has shown you that He wants to accomplish.  Last and certainly not least, just like the chicken and the pig, we don't need to be involved in God's work, we need to be committed to it.  His work should consume us and become our purpose, because we exist to glorify His name.  I don't know about you but I love bacon, because it makes everything taste better.  I'm thinking God thinks a little bacon from us (commitment) tastes even better.
